Tucker Sadler Architects in partnership with HNTB was retained for the San Diego International Airport (SDIA) Terminal 2 Expansion project. The project includes a dual-level roadway for arrivals and departures. The elevated curbside check-in system has its own underground baggage conveyor track which features security screening and routing from curb to plane.
The project is a mirror image of the previously existing terminal, with 10 new gates, raising the airport total to 55, and a signature common area for travelers. The Sunset Cove, a large concourse dining and concession area, is located inside the terminal with a glass wall facing the airstrip. The concourse, which also includes an entertainment stage, opens to a sunlit courtyard. Strategically placed interior and exterior works of art enhance the aesthetic appeal of the terminal. The San Diego International Aiport, Terminal 2 is the home of the world’s first LEED Platinum facility.
Working collaboratively with the SDIA, the project team was sucessful in maintaining operations and full security of the existing Terminal 2 facility. The existing facility and the new expansion are programmed and designed to create a seamless adjacency transition.
